January 22nd

Hi All,

Lay-up, 3-pointer, jump shot! We started our day today with basketball with Mr. Browning in gym.
We scurried up to the portable, blazing through the windy cold air to begin our academic day. In period two, language, we looked at lively verbs. Students explored how verbs can deepen the readers experience by providing imagery through lively verbs. We delved into physical and mental verbs by researching synonyms for commonly used verbs, i.e. walked, ran and cough. After an exhilarating language lesson, we scattered into our math groups and began our daily lesson. Grade 7s inhabited the world of BEDMAS, whilst the grade 8s inquired into their practice test.
With mother nature not letting up, we headed inside for morning recess. Students enjoyed chicken fingers, after their long game of circle volleyball, for lunch.
In period 4, we had a work-period for our spelling unit #14. Students investigated the latin roots of their weeks' list words. Some of them were perplexed by the task, while others, independently, and without instruction got to work. After an invigorating spelling period, we moved into history. Students are working diligently to wrap up their peer fishbones in chapter 7, with an independent summary due on Friday. Walking through the life of Queen Nzinga was exciting and very intriguing, well done everyone!
After history we swiftly moved into art. Students continued to work on their art proposal and began sketching their designs. The proposals are due by Friday. Students, please see me at 1st recess tomorrow if you have any questions.
After another indoor recess, we had science. We continued our investigation into the circulatory system, with a more specific look at the heart. We looked at ventricles and the atria, or atrium for a singular upper chamber. Students explored how blood is pumped through the body, what sounds it can make and how fit they really are. I thus propose a challenge, worth paper clips, to the students. Who can find their true resting heart rate? How fit are you really? In the wee hours of the morning, before you jump up to shower and prepare for school, see if you can take your heart rate. One paper clip for each student who completes this task; the challenge has been set!
