November 1st

Hi All,

Happy Halloween! I hope everyone had a safe and happy time trick or treating last night.

Our Fall Festival, yesterday, was a huge success! The students did such a great job putting on each of the events as well as decorating the gym, transforming it into a spook-tacular area! Thank-you to all the parents that came out and supported not only the event but our chosen charity, Sick Kids. We raised over $450.00 for Sick Kids and we are so thrilled! Thank you so very much

Today we had an exciting day as we wrapped up a portion of our language unit on instructions. The tasty baking instructions we followed provided us the opportunity to see our fellow classmates language and baking skills.
In math we worked on our Abeka math skills, comparing units of measurement and our multiplication times tables.
Our class novel is well under way with the grade 7s on chapter 2 of To Kill a Mockingbird and the Grade 8s finding out what life on a deserted island would be like in Lord of the Flies. Many of the students rationalized that they wouldn't be able to handle being away from home with no adults and only other kids. I certainly agreed with those expectations.
With the weather being so chilly and wet we had an indoor recess, that allowed us a chance to verse Ms. Chin's class in a game of circle dodgeball. What a game it is; I still don't think we have a definite winner! We will have to try again!
After our lunch we broke into Chapter 4 of history and learned how Henry Hudson came to his end. Apparently you can still see his ghost floating along the coast of the Hudson Bay if you really look. How scary! With our favourite Drama teacher being absent, we had an extended history and art period. Our history lesson continued with us leading into Japan where we learnt about Hideyoshi and the samurai's of Tokyo. With the students needing a break, we took to the outdoors for a chilly game of samurai's and daiymos. The students acted out a scene from 1614 that they assumed would have been what it was like in Japan at that time. After our quick break, we moved into art. With our reflections all handed in and a new unit begun, we started working with shapes. Positive and Negative shapes, contour shapes, 2D shapes, irregular and 3D shapes. As an introductory lesson to the art of shapes, we all learnt very quickly that we are not professional artists and will need some work developing our fine motor skills for this unit.
We ended the day with another indoor recess, as the playground was quite wet from the early rainfall, and French class. With the chaos of the indoor gym, the class took charge and ran a big game of "Octopus" and "What time is it Mr. Wolf?" They did such a great job organizing the little kids and keeping them engaged. Well done to Arielle who was our director and instruction announcer.
Mme. Stella took the students for a French class after recess.
