Happy March Break!

Today was a nice day to end term 2 in grade 6/7/8. In the morning we practiced working with fractions and started looking at them in real-world examples. We had our spelling test and then moved to reading buddies with Miss M's class.

During the term students had been working hard to collect paperclips for our class challenge. The collection of paper clips were done by completing the daily 5, brain quest, and class challenges. The students were to string the paperclips from the ceiling to the floor in our room. They were successful last week and were rewarded today with a pizza party and a movie. It was a great way have us all come together for a common goal!

We ended the day with drama and a last goodbye.

Hi All,

We had a very busy day today!
In the morning we had French and the school Reptile Show. We met a whole bunch of amazing reptiles at the show and many of us got to touch an alligator and huge boa constrictor!

In the afternoon we corrected our spelling unit 19 and had a practice quiz in preparation for our final quiz tomorrow. In math we moved on in our new unit, Number Sense, and began looking at fractions and rounding.

In science we did an experiment on changes in states and states of matter. This is looking to be a very exciting unit.

Hi All,

March 5th
Today we had our ONAP assessments in math on geometry
These will be marked and handed back by Friday March 9th
In class today we also worked on our spelling unit and made our corrections to our book reports. Book Reports are due by Wednesday.
We had drama today where the students were assigned their official roles and began practicing!
In gym we continued to work on our basketball skills

March 6th
Today was great! In Language we worked on our Direct Reading Assessments and began typing up our good book report copies.
In Music the students practiced guitar and got a new list of music notes.
We worked on Spelling and our Reading in the afternoon and then began our next Unit of Inquiry! Through this unit we will be studying civilizations and physics. We began our lesson today with an experiment on heat. We had a great time dipping our hands into the hot and cold water and seeing how we were affected by the change when we dunked them both back into the room temperature water.
After second lunch we moved into Math and began our next unit on Number Sense. We practiced rounding in grade 6 and moved into fractions for grade 7. Grade 8s are still working through the Pythagorean Theory and will be for the rest of the week.

This week has been fantastic. We have gotten a lot accomplished in all of our subjects, including our book report rough drafts, peer editing, a wrap up of our geometry unit, our inquiry into Hinduism, and our feature Canadian of February- Don Cherry.

Hi All,

Congratulations to all the students who presented their speeches today. You all did a really great job!

Today we began our strand of inquiry on Hinduism. In this strand we will be looking at the history of Hinduism as well as the religions deities. Students will be doing a summary of their chosen deity and will be constructing an art piece in their chosen deity's reflection.

We worked on our spelling unit 17 and will be having a unit test tomorrow.

Welcome Back!

Hopefully everyone had a great family day weekend.

Today we had our famous SJA pancake eating contest! The students did a fabulous job and many of the teachers ate 4 plus pancakes!!

In language we worked on adjectives and sentence structure, as well as wrapping up our Judaism reports.

In math the grade 6s played a sorting 2D shapes game, getting them prepared for classifying and identifying shapes in Jump Math

The grade 7s learnt about angle bisectors and reviewed long division.

In grade 8 we began looking at problem solving with formulas

Hi All,

Today was an exciting day! We rehearsed our speeches for Ms. Chang's class; we will announce the semi-finalists on Tuesday. We had our basketball game in which we faced Sherwood Forest. With an excellent attitude and a valiant effort we played a good game. In Gym, we exercised our lung capacity with the "Beep Test". Well done to those who made it to the 12th round!

Happy Valentine's Day Everyone!

Today we celebrated the day of love with wonderful red, white, and pink outfits and many sweets! Our house game this morning was all about love and congratulations go to Theta for the most red, white, and pink articles!

Unfortunately, Mme Stella was ill today and we had no French class. During the morning we worked on wrapping up Judaism and the students prepared a report on an aspect of the religion that they found interesting. They all did a great job. We will be wrapping them up on Thursday morning.

In math, I handed back their mini math quizzes and the students did their corrections. We all have a good grasp on geometry!

We ended the day with speech practice and I ask that all the students practice their speeches at home. THey will be presenting formally on Thursday of this week.

Hi All,

It seems everyone got enough rest last night and recuperated well from Mondays' ski day.

Today we spent our language period journal writing and reading for our upcoming book reports. While in math we focused on angles on ixl.com and Khan Academy.

After first lunch we had a mini dress rehearsal for our Gala. During our performance, we realized our stage presence was slightly off and spent some time correcting it before last lunch.

In gym we practiced our basketball skills, getting ourselves ready for the next basketball game against Sherwood Village next Thursday.

Reminders:
- Gala money is over-due. Please hand-in you money to myself or Mrs. Brasil by tomorrow, Friday latest!!

It seems the ski trip yesterday knocked us all out! I'm sure we'll all be back to ourselves tomorrow after another night of rest.

Today we spent time editing our speeches and focused on proper sentence structure. In math we focused on geometry and continued in our JUMP math books. We began our next religion in our Unit of Inquiry, Judaism, and we ended the day with gym.

Today was our first basketball game at Sherwood Heights! Congratulations to all of us as we all worked very hard, had great attitudes, and of course came home winners in all our books.

We worked on our speeches this am and thankfully, everyone completed their spelling on time and we were able to take it up in class. At the end of the day we finished up our Gala practice and are looking better by the day!

Today was our last day of curling; congratulations to the team that won!

In language today, speeches were due. Many of the students were not prepared and did not have a rough draft to submit. We spent the morning class finishing up our speeches and then editing them through. Tomorrow will be the final day for revisions as the speeches are due Friday!
We start practising on Tuesday of next week.

Hi Everyone, Happy Last Day of January!

Today we had a tidy up day. We grouped marked our math and self corrected our spelling unit 13

In Buddhism we learnt about the Four Noble Truths more in depth while in Language we began editing our report writing.

Congratulations to everyone who made the basketball team! Your first game will be on Thursday against Sherwood Heights just after lunch.

Curling is tomorrow and it is our last day; skiing begins next week!

Welcome Back, Happy Monday!

Today we spent our time working through the structure of report writing in language, the function of adjectives in spelling, and we continued with geometry in math.
In Grade 6 math we reviewed the properties of a triangle while in Grade 7 we studied perpendicular bisectors. In Grade 8 we began learning the Pythagorean Theorem!
In our unit of inquiry we started discussing Buddhism. We looked into the Four Noble Truths and the Buddha's life.

Hi Everyone!

Today was another great day! We continued our math bubbles and really got involved with angles in our own world. In language we wrapped up our last day of speech work in class and many of us are well on our way to our good copies! Don't forget those are due Wednesday!
In art we wrapped up our first world religion study with a drawing of "The Creation" by Michelangelo. Next week we will be moving into Buddhism and sculpture.

Hi All,

Today was a great day! We got lots completed and had some great discussions about our new unit on religious expression.
We did a final writing on our Unit 3 experiences and responded to some class mail from Mrs. Nelson's grade 1/2s in our language period. We learnt about pronouns in spelling and did some quiet reading on our novel study books.
In Math we worked on our geometry unit, looking at classifying shapes, labelling triangles, and using a protractor.

Hi Everyone!

Hopefully everyone had a great weekend.

Today began our new unit! Over the next six weeks, we will be talking about "How we Express Ourselves" through religion and art. Our discussions will take us to the AGO and will cumulate with an art gallery expressing our own faiths.

Our goals in this unit include completing a novel study, producing an art gallery show, and completing our homework. Homework will now be increasing to 30 minutes an evening and will consist of either Math, Spelling, Language, and/or reading and French.

During this unit we will also be skiing! Mr. Browning would like everyone's height, weight, and shoe size by this Wednesdays gym class. Please list those items in your agenda and bring to school Wednesday.

Hi All,

Today was great. We began our speeches and our research for our speeches. We corrected our jump math and started our review sheet for our unit test tomorrow. In spelling/grammar we reviewed the use and definition of verbs and worked through our unit 12 in preparation for our unit spelling test tomorrow. At the end of the day we used our drama skills to act out our emotions as well as our current play, 12th night. We ended with a game of animals that had us all thinking outside the box and participating.

Hi Everyone!

Hope everyone has had a good last two days.

In class we have been working on finishing our fair trade report writing and adding it as the first piece of our writing portfolios. We have begun peer marking in spelling as well as math. The students are great editors and succeed in effectively marking their peers work. We have begun to take some extra lessons in the Math Makes Sense books- preparing ourselves for the upcoming Unit Test on Friday.

Today we begun discussing our speech topics more in depth and started looking at persuasive writing. Just after lunch we headed to our second Curling event. We enjoyed our first match of the season having many of us talented enough to get our rocks in the house. Well Done Everyone!

Hi All,

Today was great- we had our trip to Whole Foods. We all learnt about organic vs. conventional produce, sustainable seafood at Whole Foods, and the 5 step program in their meat department. Whole Foods had lots to offer in terms of healthy living programs as well as a wealth of knowledge on local farming, organic farming, and a sustainable world.

We enjoyed lunch in their cafeteria and our tour guide gave each of the students a take home brown bag filled with organic cereal and an organic granola bar.

We finished our day with a few math mad minutes, exchange rate data and questions, and a speech topic discussion. Speeches will be coming up in February and this year the students are required to do a persuasive speech on a topic of their choice. We are in the process of selecting the topics and I would like to have them nailed down my Monday so that we can begin writing and practicing them.

Tomorrow we have our spelling test on unit 10 along with a wrap on our feature Canadian David Suzuki.

Today was our first curling outing. We all had such a great time and some of us were pros on the ice.

Today we spent our time preparing reports on our specific produce. We learnt how to produce a report on our findings and answer the required questions in a formal report.

In the afternoon we learnt how to brainstorm and develop a well thought out paragraph and we took our time catching up on math.

Unfortunately we have had a flood at St. Jude's. We are closing the school due to the water now being shut off and the amount of water in the front foyer.

Welcome Back!

It was great to see everyone again and even better to hear about their holidays!

We are halfway through the unit on "How the World Works" and will be moving forward looking into how we interact with our environment. We will be exploring world trade, fair trade, and the fishing industry.

On January 12th we will be heading to the Square One Whole Foods to talk to them about the 5 step animal program and organic produce.

I'm really looking forward to this unit!
